TZM alloys (titanium-zirconium-molybdenum) have a finer grain structure. TiC and ZrC formed in the molybdenum grain boundaries suppress grain growth and inhibit base metal failure due to fracture along the grain boundaries. TZM alloys cost about 25 percent more than pure molybdenum, but processing costs are only about 5-10 percent higher. For high-strength applications such as rocket nozzles, structural parts for furnaces and forging dies, the cost difference of this alloy is worthwhile.
